If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times…food IS medicine. So why not utilize the incredible, medicinal superfoods we have waiting for us at the grocery store?
Brazil nuts have been a part of my morning routine for several years now and not just because they taste amazing.
These powerful little nuts (which are actually seeds from the Brazil nut tree) are incredibly nutrient-dense and can benefit your health in many ways!
Let’s dive in…
Rich in Selenium
Selenium is a trace element that’s vital for our bodies to operate properly. It’s essential for thyroid function & influences the immune system & cell growth.
Brazil nuts contain more selenium than any other nut with an average of 96 mcg per nut (some provide as much as 400 mcg). Studies have shown that eating two Brazil nuts every day was just as effective as taking a selenium supplement!
Why This Matters…
Selenium is crucial to many bodily functions from mood regulation to a healthy inflammation response. Higher levels of selenium have also been linked to enhanced immune function & thyroid health.
Plus, it can be a helpful protectant against cancer, infections, heart disease & mood disorders like anxiety & depression.
Brazil nuts also contain ellagic acid (as do most nuts) which has high anti-inflammatory properties, protects against cancers & can improve brain function.
Easy to Enjoy!
I personally enjoy my two daily Brazil nuts with coffee first thing in the morning (mostly as not to forget), but there are so many great ways to incorporate them into your diet!
Throw them in a batch of homemade granola, chop & sprinkle on your yogurt & oatmeal or add them into a smoothie. I chat more about my complete morning routine in my Daily Rituals & Routines blog post (linked) if you’ want to dive in a bit more!
